Sire Beach, North Lombok: The Complete Guide

Sire Beach sits on Lombok's northwest coast, a stretch of coastline that gets a fraction of the visitors you'll find in Kuta Lombok or across the water in Bali. That's most of its appeal. Here's what to know before you go.

Where it is. Sire Beach is in Tanjung, North Lombok, roughly 40–50 minutes from Lombok International Airport by car and about 20 minutes from the Bangsal and Teluk Nara harbors that run boats to the Gili Islands. It's close enough to the islands to use as a base, far enough from them to stay quiet.

What the sand and water are like. The beach itself is a mix of pale sand and coral fragments rather than the powder-fine sand of the Gilis, with calm, shallow water close to shore — good for wading and easy swimming rather than serious snorkeling. At low tide, the shoreline widens considerably and exposes tide pools worth walking out to. Bring reef shoes if you plan to explore the rockier sections.

What there is to do. Sunrise here faces east over Bali's Mount Agung on a clear day, and sunset views toward Gunung Rinjani inland are worth timing a walk around. Fishing boats still launch from the beach most mornings, and a short walk or drive gets you to the harbor for day trips to Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, or Gili Air. Inland, the drive toward Senaru and the base of Mount Rinjani makes for a good half-day if you want green instead of blue.

Best time to visit. The dry season, roughly April through October, gives you the calmest seas and the most reliable weather for boat crossings to the Gilis. The shoulder months of April and October tend to have fewer visitors and still-good conditions.

Where to stay. North Lombok's accommodation near Sire Beach is mostly small and low-rise — there's no strip of high-rises here, which is part of why the area has stayed quiet.
